Moment to moment, three kinds of intelligence are shaping what you do, decide, and feel — one protective, one connecting, one planning ahead. They run whether or not you notice them. Mostly, we don’t.

Noticing these three intelligences working within us is a learnable skill. Call it literacy: the ability to read what’s happening inside you while it’s happening — even in the heat of the moment — and with that insight, to see, right there, a different way forward.

That’s also why the old line about people never changing doesn’t hold. We change constantly. The real question is whether the changing happens to you or with you — and what kind you’d choose.

It’s an odd capacity when you stop to look at it: standing back from yourself, mid-moment, and reading your own weather. It may be the thing that sets us apart as a species. To the extent we use it.
